Dhaka, May 23 (V7N) — Faiz Ahmed Tayyab, Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor on ICT, has said that Professor Muhammad Yunus will not resign from his role as Chief Advisor to the interim government, stating that while Yunus does not seek power, he is essential for a peaceful democratic transition in Bangladesh.
Tayyab made the remarks in a Facebook post from his verified account on Friday (May 23), amid growing public and political discourse surrounding the future of the interim administration.
“Professor Yunus does not need power,” he wrote. “But Bangladesh needs him. He is crucial for a peaceful and democratic transition of power.”
Cabinet Must Become "More Dynamic"
Tayyab emphasized the need for the interim government to increase its visibility and effectiveness. “The cabinet needs to be more dynamic. Advisors need to work more actively, and visible progress must be presented to the public,” he said.
He also stressed that the government must demonstrate that it has been successful under Dr. Yunus’ leadership, especially as it came into office following a popular uprising with broad public consent.
“Dr. Yunus enjoys the respect of the global community. It is our responsibility to uphold that image,” he added.
Call for Dialogue and Inclusion
Highlighting the importance of inclusiveness and political consensus, Tayyab urged the government to intensify dialogue with all political parties. “We should regularly sit down with political stakeholders and seek their opinions on key national issues,” he wrote.
Tayyab warned against any form of isolation, saying, “No isolation is desirable. The Bangladesh Army must be shown respect and kept in trust—but they will not interfere in politics. No modern, civilized military engages in political affairs.”
He criticized remarks made by the army chief regarding the timeline for elections, saying, “The army chief did not maintain jurisdictional propriety in his election-related remarks.”
“No Political Rehabilitation for Awami League”
Faiz also took a firm stance against what he termed as “political rehabilitation” of the Awami League in the name of inclusivity. “Seeking the rehabilitation of the Awami League under the guise of inclusiveness is unacceptable,” he stated, while reaffirming the nation’s respect and trust in the Bangladesh Army.
Timeline for Reforms, Elections, and Trials
Tayyab expressed optimism that the national election will be held by April-May 2026, following the completion of all necessary reforms.
He called for the drafting of the “July Charter”—a key political framework—in time for the one-year anniversary of the July Uprising, which will be commemorated nationwide this coming July-August.
Tayyab also said he hopes the first verdict in the trial of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, referred to in his post as a “dictatorial murderer,” will be announced by August.
“Personal Opinion”
Later, Faiz Ahmed Tayyab clarified in a follow-up post that the views expressed were his personal opinions and not official government statements.
