Dhaka, May 23 (V7N) Widespread speculation has emerged over the possible resignation of Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Advisor of Bangladesh’s interim government, following reports of internal tensions, ministry reshuffling, and alleged pressure from the military establishment.

Social media platforms and several news portals have circulated unverified claims suggesting that Dr. Yunus may step down amidst mounting political and administrative pressure. However, no official confirmation has been released from the government.

Since taking office on August 8, 2024, after the collapse of the Awami League-led government, Dr. Yunus has faced challenges in asserting authority. In a notable move earlier this year, key portfolios under his supervision — including Food and Civil Aviation & Tourism — were reassigned to other advisors. Analysts see this as a potential sign of diminishing influence.

Concerns have also been raised regarding the role of the military in government affairs. A recent attempt by the National Human Rights Commission to inspect alleged secret detention centers reportedly faced obstruction, reportedly due to military pressure. Sources suggest Dr. Yunus was restricted from allowing full media and civil society access to those facilities.

Despite growing speculation, the interim government has not issued any statement regarding the Chief Advisor’s position. Political analysts warn that any change at the top could significantly affect the roadmap for democratic transition and upcoming elections.

The situation remains fluid, and further developments are expected in the coming days.
