Dhaka, May 14 (V7N) – Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, has reaffirmed that the issue of holding national elections is entirely an internal matter of Bangladesh. He urged all foreign actors to respect the sovereign will of the Bangladeshi people.
His remarks came in response to India's reaction to the ban on Awami League activities, as conveyed during a briefing to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS).
"The wounds caused by the crimes against humanity committed by the Awami League are still fresh," Shafiqul Alam stated. He accused the party of having destroyed Bangladesh’s democratic structure, narrowed political space, and compromised national sovereignty over their 15-year rule, which he described as "authoritarian and plunderous."
He further justified the ban, saying it was necessary to protect national security and sovereignty, ensure the safety of activists in the July Movement, and safeguard the plaintiffs and witnesses of the International Crimes Tribunal.
Addressing concerns about the upcoming national polls, the Press Secretary recalled that the Awami League had repeatedly resorted to farcical elections, causing irreparable damage to the country's electoral process and institutions.
“The interim government is committed to a comprehensive reform process aimed at rebuilding the democratic foundation of Bangladesh,” he added.
