Dhaka, Nov 13 (V7N)- Brig Gen (retd) Dr. M Sakhawat Hussain, adviser on shipping, labour, and employment, underscored the importance of ensuring better working conditions within Bangladesh's shipbuilding industry during his visit to Karnaphuli Shipyard in Narayanganj port on Wednesday. He called on shipyard authorities to adhere to international standards and eliminate child labor, according to a ministry press release.

Dr. Sakhawat urged shipbuilding companies to provide adequate accommodation facilities and to prioritize workers' health and safety. He stressed the need for timely payment of wages and allowances, along with additional compensation for overtime work.

He further advocated for the social security of shipbuilding workers, suggesting that prioritizing their welfare could accelerate the country’s economic growth. He expressed optimism for the industry's advancement through coordinated efforts.

While at the shipyard, Dr. Sakhawat engaged with workers, inquiring about their wellbeing. He also instructed the authorities to hasten the construction of four coastal passenger vessels, three BIWTCA passenger cruise vessels, and BIWTA dredgers currently under development at Karnaphuli Shipyard.
