Sylhet, Mar 15 (V7N) — The early seasonal rainfall across Sylhet has brought renewed greenery to the region’s tea gardens, marking the start of the first flush tea harvest. Tea estates in Sylhet, Moulvibazar, and Habiganj have regained their lush green appearance after the fall of yellowed leaves in recent days.
The Rajnagar Tea Estate, established by industrialist Dr. Alhaj Ragib Ali, is filled with the fresh aroma of newly sprouted tea leaves following the season’s first rain on Friday morning, March 13. The initial rainfall invigorates the tea plants, stimulating the growth of tender leaves, which are highly valued for their delicate flavor and fragrance.
Tea workers begin harvesting the first flush at daybreak, following the standard practice of plucking two leaves and a bud from each stem to maintain quality. The early leaves, known as “first flush,” are considered premium due to their softness, aroma, and superior taste, making them particularly prized in the market.
Shihab Uddin Chowdhury, manager of Rajnagar Tea Estate, emphasized the importance of the first flush for the country’s tea industry, particularly in northeastern regions like Moulvibazar, Srimangal, and Sylhet. He noted that the harvest creates a festive atmosphere in the gardens and sets the tone for the new season.
The tea garden workers expressed enthusiasm as they began plucking the tender leaves. Basanti Ravidash, a female tea worker, said that the first rainfall marks the start of the new season and that they nurture the tea plants as carefully as children. Assistant Senior Manager Juel Ahmed remarked that beginning the first flush on a rain-soaked day is considered auspicious and could positively impact production if weather conditions remain favorable.
During the formal harvest, the estate’s imam and priest offered prayers for the prosperity and success of Rajnagar Tea Estate. Six of last year’s best pluckers were recognized and awarded by Manager Shihab Uddin Chowdhury for their outstanding contribution to tea production.
The onset of the first flush signifies the start of an important period for Bangladesh’s tea industry, promising high-quality tea and a vibrant season ahead.
