Harare, Aug 30 (V7N)- At least 27 people have been killed in a head-on collision between a minibus and a cargo truck in Zimbabwe. The victims were reportedly Christians travelling to attend a church conference.

The accident occurred on Friday night (August 28) near Chivhu, about 132 kilometres south of the capital Harare.

According to police, the cargo truck was overtaking another vehicle when it collided head-on with a minibus travelling in the opposite direction. Following the collision, the minibus caught fire and was completely destroyed.

Police said 23 people died at the scene. Four others later succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment at a hospital, bringing the death toll to 27.

At least seven people were injured in the accident and are undergoing treatment.

Zimbabwean police said fatal road accidents are common in the country due to reckless driving, poor road conditions and vehicle overloading.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident.
