Johannesburg, Jul 02 (V7N) — More than 900 protesters have been arrested across South Africa during nationwide anti-immigration demonstrations, authorities confirmed on Wednesday.
According to Reuters, police said most of Tuesday's protests were peaceful, although several areas witnessed violence, looting and clashes with law enforcement.
Police said a total of 120 protest marches were held across the country, with 108 remaining peaceful. However, authorities intervened to disperse 12 demonstrations after unrest and public disorder broke out.
Most of those arrested were accused of participating in violent incidents, while several undocumented immigrants were also detained during the operations.
The wave of anti-immigration protests comes after months of growing tensions across South Africa. Thousands of immigrants have reportedly left the country amid the unrest.
According to multiple media reports, at least four people have been killed in protest-related violence so far, raising concerns over the deteriorating security situation.
Authorities said they remain on high alert and will continue operations to maintain public order and prevent further violence.
