Dhaka, Dec 12 (V7N) — Bulgaria’s government has stepped down following two weeks of widespread anti-corruption protests. Prime Minister Rosen Zhelezkov announced the resignation on Thursday (December 11), just minutes before parliament was scheduled to vote on a no-confidence motion, Reuters reported.
For the past two weeks, thousands of protesters have taken to the streets, accusing the government of failing to curb corruption. Demonstrations spread beyond the capital Sofia to several other cities, intensifying pressure on the administration. The resignation comes less than a year after the government took office.
The situation escalated last week when the government unveiled its 2026 national budget plan, which faced immediate backlash and had to be withdrawn due to nationwide protests.
Under Bulgaria’s constitution, the **President—whose executive powers are limited—**will now invite parliamentary parties to attempt forming a new government. If they fail, he will appoint an interim administration to run the country until fresh elections are held.
