Barcelona, June 19 (V7N) — Spanish goalkeeper Juan Garcia has officially signed a six-year contract with FC Barcelona, joining the reigning La Liga champions from city rivals Espanyol in a deal worth €25 million.
The Catalan giants confirmed that Garcia will formally sign his contract on Friday (June 20). His contract with Barcelona will run until June 30, 2031.
Garcia played a key role in Espanyol’s promotion to La Liga in 2024, earning widespread acclaim for his commanding performances between the posts. He notably starred in Espanyol’s shock 1-0 victory over Real Madrid last February, further cementing his reputation as one of Spain’s rising goalkeeping talents.
With this move, Garcia has made history, becoming the first player in 31 years to transfer directly from Espanyol to Barcelona, adding an extra layer of significance to the transfer given the intense rivalry between the two Catalan clubs.
Garcia’s arrival bolsters Barcelona’s goalkeeping department, which now includes Marc-André ter Stegen, Wojciech Szczęsny, and Iñaki Peña in the senior squad. The signing is seen as part of Barcelona’s long-term succession planning for the goalkeeper position.
