Washington, Sep 26 (V7N)- US President Donald Trump has said he discussed the possibility of war with Iran with Chinese President Xi Jinping during their recent talks.
Asked Friday whether there would be progress toward reopening the Strait of Hormuz, Trump said, "I think we are going to do something great."
Earlier that day, US Ambassador to China David Perdue was asked by CNBC whether China was providing assistance to Iran amid the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
"There is indirect support," Perdue said.
He added that Trump had made clear to Xi that any Chinese assistance to Iran was "unacceptable." Perdue said the warning covered direct or indirect assistance, including intelligence, military equipment and related components.
Trump and Xi discussed the Middle East conflict during their September 25 meeting in Washington, according to reporting on the talks. Xi urged the United States and Iran to return to an earlier framework and continue negotiations, while Trump warned against Chinese support for Iran.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a major international energy and shipping route, with its disruption affecting oil supplies and global energy markets.
The discussions came as Iran has proposed a seven-day plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and resume negotiations, while Washington and Tehran remain at odds over the conditions for ending the conflict.
