New York, Sep 26 (V7N)- UN Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed deep concern over the recent escalation of tensions and conflict in Yemen and the wider region.
According to a statement from the UN Secretary-General's office, Guterres met with Abdullah Al-Alimi Bawazir, Vice President of Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council, to discuss the country's political, humanitarian and economic situation.
During the meeting, Guterres voiced "deep concern" over the recent rise in tensions in Yemen and surrounding areas.
The UN chief also called for the immediate and unconditional release of UN personnel and staff from other agencies who are being arbitrarily detained by the Houthi movement.
The statement said the ongoing political and humanitarian crises in Yemen have been compounded by a deterioration in the country's security situation.
Guterres stressed the importance of addressing the crisis through dialogue and cooperation among the relevant parties.
The UN has repeatedly called for the protection of humanitarian personnel and the release of detained UN staff, while urging all sides to work toward a political solution to Yemen's prolonged conflict.
The latest meeting came amid continuing concerns over instability in Yemen and its potential impact on the wider region.
