Seattle, Jun 28 (V7N) – Portugal booked their place in the Round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup as Group K runners-up after playing out a goalless draw with Colombia in their final group-stage match on Sunday, setting up a highly anticipated knockout clash with Croatia.

The result saw Colombia finish top of Group K with seven points from three matches, while Portugal advanced in second place. In the group's other fixture, the Democratic Republic of Congo kept their World Cup hopes alive by defeating Uzbekistan 3-1 to finish third.

Although the match ended without a goal, it was filled with intensity as both sides created numerous scoring opportunities. Colombia dominated much of the contest and repeatedly tested Portugal's defence with relentless attacking football.

The South Americans registered 24 shots compared to Portugal's 13, highlighting their superiority in creating chances. Portugal goalkeeper and defenders were forced into several crucial interventions to keep the score level.

The biggest moment of the match came in the closing stages when Colombian defender Davinson Sánchez found the back of the net with a superb finish. However, the celebrations were cut short after the goal was ruled out for offside, allowing Roberto Martínez's side to escape defeat.

Seeking greater control after halftime, Portugal head coach Roberto Martínez introduced Diogo Dalot and João Neves in place of Rúben Neves and João Cancelo. The substitutions helped Portugal increase their attacking momentum, but they were unable to break down Colombia's disciplined defence.

Despite surrendering the group title, Portugal achieved their primary objective of reaching the knockout stage.

The draw has now set the stage for one of the most anticipated matches of the tournament, with Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal set to face Luka Modrić's Croatia in the Round of 32—a showdown between two of football's greatest modern icons and former Real Madrid teammates.
