Los Angeles, Jun 28 (V7N) – Algeria produced a spirited comeback to level the score at 1-1 against Austria by half-time in their final group-stage match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Sunday, keeping their hopes alive after falling behind early in the contest.
Austria began the match on the front foot, applying sustained attacking pressure and taking an early lead in the European-African showdown.
However, the Desert Foxes gradually regained control of the midfield as the first half progressed and began creating dangerous opportunities in the Austrian half.
Their persistence paid off in the 44th minute when forward Rafik Belghali broke through the Austrian defence before firing a precise shot from inside the penalty area to bring Algeria level just before the interval.
The equaliser silenced Austria's momentum and ensured the two teams headed into the break locked at 1-1.
Algeria's strong finish to the opening half has shifted the psychological momentum in their favour as they look to complete the turnaround and strengthen their hopes of progressing in the tournament.
