Kolkata, Jun 21 (V7N) – India has commissioned three newly built indigenous warships into its Navy, further strengthening the country's maritime defence capabilities and reinforcing its push for self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi formally inducted the vessels into service during a ceremony held at Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Port in Kolkata on Sunday.
The three vessels commissioned are the stealth frigate INS Dunagiri, the survey vessel INS Sanshodhak, and the anti-submarine warfare ship INS Agray, according to Indian media reports.
INS Dunagiri, equipped with advanced stealth features and sophisticated sensors, has been fitted with the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system for surface-to-surface strikes, as well as advanced surface-to-air missile capabilities, significantly enhancing the Indian Navy's combat readiness.
The survey vessel INS Sanshodhak has been designed to conduct hydrographic surveys and collect critical seabed and oceanographic data. The information gathered by the vessel will support navigation, maritime infrastructure development and defence operations.
Meanwhile, INS Agray has been specifically developed for anti-submarine warfare missions. The vessel is equipped with lightweight torpedoes, rocket launchers and other advanced systems designed to detect and neutralize underwater threats.
Addressing the commissioning ceremony, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Indian Navy and the shipbuilders involved in the projects, highlighting India's growing defence manufacturing capabilities.
"Today, India is no longer limited to being only an importer of weapons. We are manufacturing advanced defence equipment and exporting it to many countries around the world. Self-reliance and the vision of a developed India are the foundations of our progress," Modi said.
The induction of the three indigenously built warships marks another milestone in India's "Make in India" and "Aatmanirbhar Bharat" (Self-Reliant India) initiatives, aimed at reducing dependence on foreign defence imports while strengthening the country's strategic maritime presence in the Indo-Pacific region.
