Vancouver, June 20 (V7N) – Canada celebrated a historic 6-0 victory over Qatar in their 2026 FIFA World Cup clash, but the match will also be remembered for a shocking injury to Canadian midfielder Ismaël Koné that left players and supporters in disbelief.
The co-hosts produced a dominant performance at the Vancouver stadium, with Jonathan David scoring a brilliant hat-trick and Jacob Schaffelburg also finding the net to complete a memorable win. However, the mood inside the stadium changed dramatically in the 52nd minute when Koné suffered a serious injury.
The incident occurred near the team dugout when Qatar midfielder Asim Madibo made a dangerous challenge on Koné. The impact left the Canadian midfielder in severe pain, with teammates immediately calling for medical assistance.
Due to the seriousness of the injury, broadcasters did not show a replay of the incident. Players from both sides surrounded Koné to protect him from cameras as medical staff rushed onto the field. After a VAR review, referee showed Madibo a straight red card, reducing Qatar to nine players. Earlier, Homam Ahmed had also been sent off after receiving two yellow cards.
After a 10-minute delay, Canada returned to action with renewed determination. In the 65th minute, substitute Nathan Saliba scored from a free kick and celebrated by holding up Koné’s jersey in tribute to his injured teammate.
Canada continued their attacking surge as Schaffelburg added another goal before Jonathan David completed his hat-trick, securing a historic 6-0 triumph.
After the match, Canada head coach Jesse Marsch said the injury had a deep emotional impact on the team, describing the moment as extremely difficult for the players and staff.
Koné, who was taken to hospital for further treatment, showed his fighting spirit by waving to supporters while being carried away on a stretcher.
The Canadians dedicated their record-breaking victory to their injured teammate, turning a night of celebration into a moment of unity and determination.
