HABIGANJ, June 13 (V7N) – At least four villages in Shahjahanpur union of Madhabpur upazila have been flooded by sudden mountain floods and water coming down from upstream India. The floods, which started on Friday night, have submerged vast areas of Bhandarua, Jamalpur, Louhad, Ektiaarpur, and several surrounding areas, leaving more than 500 families living in inhuman conditions due to waterlogging.

Due to continuous heavy rains and the pressure of mountain streams coming from upstream India, a part of the Simna river broke in the Bhandarua area. The situation deteriorated overnight, and several low-lying areas of villages were flooded. Normal life has been severely disrupted as rural roads, croplands, homes, and ponds have been submerged. Many mud and mud-made houses have been partially or completely damaged.

Local residents described their distress: Humayun Kabir from Bhandarua said many ponds were washed away along with fish. Rokeya Begum from Jamalpur said stoves were submerged, preventing cooking, and many families are surviving on dry food. Farmer Abdul Qadir reported that his paddy, vegetables, and livestock feed were ruined overnight, wiping out months of hard work.

Hundreds of acres of aush paddy, seasonal vegetables, and livestock food have been destroyed in the floodwaters. Fish farmers have also faced major financial losses as many ponds have been submerged. Shahjahanpur Union Parishad Chairman Md. Parvez Hossain Chowdhury visited the area and reported the matter to the upazila administration, requesting immediate relief assistance.

Madhabpur Upazila Agriculture Officer Sajib Sarkar said field workers of the Agriculture Department have started inspecting the affected areas to assess the extent of crop damage. After receiving the final report, higher authorities will be informed and necessary steps will be taken to help affected farmers. Locals fear the damage could increase further if water does not recede quickly and have demanded emergency relief, dry food, and rehabilitation for the flood-trapped people.
