Dhaka, Sep 25 (V7N) – Bangladeshi mountaineer Toufiq Ahmed Tamal has successfully conquered Mount Manaslu, the world’s 8th highest peak, at 4 a.m. today (Thursday).

Tamal began his expedition on September 1, carrying the national flag handed over to him by Bangladesh’s first female Everest conqueror Nishat Majumdar at a ceremony held at the World Literature Center’s Cultural Development Center in Dhaka. The event was aimed at inspiring the younger generation by highlighting the challenges and possibilities of mountaineering.

With more than 14 years of experience in trekking and high-altitude climbing, Tamal has previously completed basic and advanced mountaineering training at the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering in India. He has summited seven peaks between 5,000–6,000 meters and two peaks above 6,500 meters.

His notable achievements include:

  • First Bangladeshi to conquer Tharpu Chulli in a winter expedition.

  • First Bangladeshi to climb Bhagirathi-2 (6,512 m).

  • Successful summit of Mount Ama Dablam (6,814 m) in 2023, one of the world’s most technically challenging climbs.

Mount Manaslu stands at 8,163 meters (26,781 ft) in the Mansiri Himalayas of west-central Nepal. Its name derives from the Sanskrit word Manasa meaning "intellect" or "soul," thus translating to the "mountain of the soul."

The peak was first climbed on May 9, 1956, by Toshio Imanishi and Galgen Norbu of a Japanese expedition. Despite being the 8th highest mountain in the world, it is considered the 4th deadliest peak, making Tamal’s achievement a landmark in Bangladesh’s mountaineering history.
