DHAKA, June 18 (V7N)– The Bangladeshi government is exploring the possibility of integrating traffic police into the investigation of road accidents, a move aimed at enhancing the thoroughness and effectiveness of crash probes. Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner SM Sazzat Ali announced this initiative on Tuesday during a two-day workshop focused on improving police personnel's investigative skills in road crash incidents.

Currently, the traffic department primarily manages vehicular movement, while the crime department is responsible for investigating road accidents. Commissioner Ali stressed the need for police personnel to possess enhanced skills to conduct these investigations properly.

"Initiatives will be taken to involve traffic police in investigating road crashes in the coming days," stated DMP Commissioner SM Sazzat Ali.

He emphasized the critical importance of stricter enforcement of existing laws to curb road mishaps. "We want strict implementation of the existing laws to check road crashes," Ali asserted. He further noted that accurately identifying the causes of accidents would play a crucial role in reducing road fatalities.

The DMP Commissioner highlighted that preventing road crashes also necessitates strict adherence to traffic rules by all road users. Violations such as exceeding speed limits, making sudden lane changes, and indiscriminate road crossing significantly elevate accident risks. He pointed out that most road crashes in Dhaka city occur between midnight and morning when roads are relatively empty.

In an appeal to political leaders, Commissioner Ali urged them to avoid organizing political programs on roads to alleviate public suffering. "We have requested the top leaders of political parties to avoid political programmes on roads, as such programmes cause sufferings for common people," he said.

The two-day workshop, which saw the participation of 60 police officers from various units of the DMP, is being conducted at Hotel InterContinental in the capital. The training is being provided by the international organization Global Road Safety Partnership, underscoring a collaborative effort to enhance road safety in Dhaka.
