Sirajganj, June 14 (V7N) — Like the outbound rush before Eid, long traffic jams have formed on both sides of the Jamuna Bridge highway as people return to Dhaka at the end of the 10-day Eid-ul-Azha holiday. The pressure of returning holidaymakers has brought traffic to a crawl.
From early Saturday morning, the number of vehicles on the roads increased significantly as offices, courts, and other workplaces are set to reopen from Sunday (June 15). Adding to the woes, road development work is ongoing in several parts of the highway.
The situation worsened when a vehicle broke down on the Jamuna Bridge, causing a traffic jam stretching at least 20 kilometers on the Dhaka-bound lane from Nalka in Sirajganj to Elenga in Tangail. Vehicles have been moving at a snail’s pace, causing immense suffering for both passengers and drivers.
Highway Police are on the ground working to ease the congestion, but the pressure of vehicles continues to mount.
Meanwhile, similar scenes were seen at Daulatdia Ghat, one of the country’s busiest ferry terminals. The number of passengers and vehicles heading towards Dhaka from the country’s southern districts has increased sharply. Crowds have been seen since morning, although crossings have been smooth so far, according to terminal authorities.
Pressure has also been observed at the launch ghats, and officials predict that traffic will intensify further in the afternoon.
Despite some relief in ferry and launch services, the overall journey back to Dhaka remains challenging for thousands returning after the Eid celebrations.
