Rajshahi, Oct 17 (V7N) - Tanore Upazila in Rajshahi, located approximately 30 kilometers northwest of the district headquarters near Shibnodi and Bilkumari, is home to the centuries-old Bhagna Mosque in Shidhaire village of Saranjai Union. Built by skilled Iranian artisans, the mosque, with its three domes, continues to captivate locals and visitors alike with its artistic beauty and architectural elegance.
The origins of Tanore date back to its name derived from “Tanor,” meaning lifeless or desolate, as the region was once barren land. Over centuries, it transformed into a fertile agricultural hub, playing a significant role in supplying rice and other crops across Bangladesh. Despite the modest early settlement, the area retains several historical structures, including zamindar houses, mausoleums, temples, and mosques. Among them, Bhagna Mosque stands as a remarkable testament to the region’s rich heritage.
The mosque occupies a rectangular plot of approximately 11 centuries of historical significance, measuring 40 feet in length and 24 feet in width. Its walls are adorned with intricate terracotta floral and vine patterns, reflecting classical Islamic art. Each dome features inscriptions in Persian, crediting the original builders and inviting congregational prayers. The domes’ apexes are embellished with tiered ornamental belts, surrounded by four slender minarets at each corner. Additional small square minarets complement the front and western walls. Three medium-sized doors provide access to the mosque’s interior, where decorative designs enhance the architectural splendor.
A black Persian plaque above the central doorway suggests the mosque was constructed during the British period with the involvement of Persian or Iranian artisans. Local lore mentions that two inner pillars were added following a strong earthquake, while the mosque’s eastern side was later expanded to accommodate the growing number of worshippers. Today, the mosque remains a center for daily prayers and Jumma congregations, attracting visitors throughout the year.
Although restoration and repainting by local communities have altered its original colors, experts believe that conservation under the Department of Archaeology could enhance the mosque’s historical and touristic appeal. The Bhagna Mosque continues to stand proudly as a symbol of Tanore’s history and architectural heritage, preserving the legacy of skilled craftsmanship for future generations.
