Madaripur, August 4 (V7N) – Police have arrested Shahjahan Molla, chairman of Paikpara Union Parishad and president of the local unit of the ruling Awami League in Rajair upazila of Madaripur district. He was detained on Sunday around 5:00 PM from his home area in Nararkandi village.
 
Shahjahan Molla, son of the late Mohsin Molla, was reportedly named in a criminal case filed in the wake of Bangladesh's July uprising. According to police and local sources, the case was lodged by Shah Alam Sheikh, also known as Kobbas Sheikh, a local activist of the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) from Pathankandi village.
 
The complaint, filed on November 24, 2024, accused Shahjahan Molla of involvement in a bomb explosion, vandalism of the BNP’s local party gate, and looting during the political unrest that followed the July mass movement which led to regime change in the country.
 
Shahjahan Molla is known to be a political follower of former shipping minister and ex-presidium member of the Awami League, Shahjahan Khan, who previously served as MP from Madaripur-2 constituency, which includes Rajair and Madaripur Sadar.
 
Confirming the arrest, Rajair Police Station Officer-in-Charge, (OC) Masud Khan said that Shahjahan Molla is a named accused in the case and will be presented before the Madaripur court on Monday for further legal proceedings.
 
The arrest marks one of several recent legal actions against former ruling party figures who allegedly engaged in political violence and disruption before the collapse of the previous government.
