Dhaka, Oct 05 (V7N) – Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam has announced that an investigation will soon begin against the Awami League as a political party for alleged crimes against humanity. The statement came on Sunday (October 5) as he confirmed that the International Crimes Tribunal will initiate a trial process to examine the Awami League as a potential criminal organization.
“The Nationalist Democratic Movement (NDM) has already filed a complaint against the Awami League as a party, accusing it of crimes against humanity,” said the Chief Prosecutor. “We are investigating based on that complaint. At this moment, we are starting the preliminary investigation to determine the party’s accountability as a criminal organization.”
He added that once the investigation is in full swing, the prosecution will be able to assess the extent of the party’s responsibility. “We are seriously reviewing the allegations, and the official investigation will begin very soon,” he said.
Tajul Islam further noted that significant progress may be seen within this month, as several trials are ongoing and some are nearing completion. “Charge sheets in major cases are being prepared, and we expect to file formal charges soon,” he added.
Meanwhile, in the July crimes against humanity case, the International Crimes Tribunal-2 is set to issue an order on Monday regarding the cognizance of three charges against four individuals, including Awami League leader Mahbubul Alam Hanif, accused of the killing of six people in Kushtia.
Additionally, the ninth day of testimony in another crimes against humanity case—related to the July–August movement and the killing of Shaheed Anas in Chankharpul, Dhaka—will be held today at the International Crimes Tribunal-1, where three witnesses are expected to testify.
In other developments, eight individuals, including former NTMC Director General Ziaul Ahsan and Abdullah Hill Kafi, were produced before the tribunal this morning in a separate case of genocide and crimes against humanity. Four other accused in similar cases were also presented before the tribunal today.
