Tehran, July 26 (V7N)- Iran has warned that Ukraine will face consequences over what Tehran describes as an attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea, further escalating tensions between the two countries.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi issued the warning in a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday (July 26).
In his post, Araghchi described the alleged attack as a clear violation of the United Nations Charter. He also accused Ukraine of carrying out the operation at the direction of Israel in an effort to draw Europe further into the ongoing Middle East conflict.
The Iranian foreign minister reiterated Tehran's condemnation of the incident and said Iran reserves the right to respond in order to protect its national interests.
Meanwhile, Ukraine has maintained that its military operations targeted Russian vessels allegedly involved in transporting military equipment. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia has been supporting Iran in the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Kyiv has not publicly acknowledged targeting an Iranian commercial ship, and the differing claims made by the two sides have not been independently verified.
Relations between Iran and Ukraine have remained strained in recent years. Western countries have repeatedly expressed concern over military cooperation between Russia and Iran, while Ukraine and its allies have accused Russia of using Iranian-made drones in its war against Ukraine. Iran has consistently denied supplying weapons for use in the conflict after its outbreak.
