Dhaka, Oct 20 (V7N) – Students of Jagannath University (JNU) staged a protest in front of Bongsal Police Station late Sunday night, demanding the immediate arrest of the suspects in the killing of JNU statistics student and Chhatra Dal leader Jobayed Hossain. The protest escalated as students set fire to parts of the road around 12:30 a.m., blocking traffic.

Earlier, around 10 p.m., students had organized a march from the university, obstructing traffic at Tantibazar Mor for several hours. Participants raised slogans such as “Why did my brother die? Administration, answer!” and “My brother is in the grave, why is the killer free?”

Police took Jobayed’s private student, Barsha Akter, into custody around 11 p.m. from her residence at Roushan Villa on Nurbox Road in Bongsal. While questioning her, police placed her under custody for further investigation. Authorities have not yet released any official statement regarding her involvement.

According to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Lalbagh Zone, two suspects have been preliminarily identified in connection with Jobayed Hossain’s murder. DMP Lalbagh Zone Deputy Commissioner Mallick Ahsan Uddin Sami said, “We have identified two individuals as primary suspects. Multiple police teams are actively working in the field to apprehend them.”

Jobayed Hossain was reportedly stabbed to death around 4:45 p.m. at the residence of the student he tutored, located on the third floor of Roushan Villa, 15 Nurbox Lane, Old Dhaka. Blood was found scattered from the ground floor to the third-floor staircase, and his body was discovered lying on the third floor.

CCTV footage shows two young men, wearing black T-shirts and carrying black backpacks, running from Mokhta area of Nurbox Road toward Bongsal Road at 4:39 p.m. Police believe they may be involved in the murder.

Jobayed, a 2019–20 academic year student in the statistics department, also served as the president of the Cumilla District Student Welfare Association and a member of the university’s Chhatra Dal executive committee. He had been tutoring Barsha Akter in physics, chemistry, and biology for the past year. Barsha’s father is identified as Giasuddin.

Following the murder, police visited the residence around 5 p.m. and conducted initial interrogations. Later, Lalbagh Zone officials questioned Barsha’s family and other household members. Authorities continue to investigate the case to determine the full circumstances behind the killing.
