Dhaka, Oct 20 (V7N) – Hundreds of students from Jagannath University laid siege to Bangshal Police Station in Old Dhaka late Sunday night, demanding the immediate arrest of those responsible for the murder of fellow student and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leader, Zubaid Ahmed. The protesters also set fires on the road and chanted slogans accusing the authorities of inaction.
The demonstration began around midnight, with more than 2,000 students gathering in front of the police station and blocking the road. Chanting slogans such as “Why was my brother killed? The administration must answer!” and “Students are dying in the streets — where is the administration?”, they vowed to continue their protest until justice is served.
Imon, a fourth-year student, told reporters, “The killers must be arrested tonight. If the administration fails to catch them, we will paralyze Dhaka from tomorrow.”
Earlier, at around 11:10 p.m., police detained Zubaid’s classmate, Barsha, from her residence, Roushan Villa, on Nur Box Road in the Bangshal area. She is currently being questioned in police custody.
Deputy Commissioner of Lalbagh Zone, Mallik Ahsan Uddin Sami, said, “We have detained the student for preliminary questioning and are holding other family members for interrogation. CCTV footage has helped us identify two suspects, and several police teams are working on the ground to arrest them. We expect progress very soon.”
Zubaid, a student of Jagannath University and an active member of the student wing of the BNP, was stabbed to death on a stairway at a private tuition center in Bangshal around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. Police and members of the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) arrived shortly after the incident, cordoned off the area, and collected initial forensic evidence during a six-hour investigation at the crime scene.
The brutal killing has sparked widespread outrage among university students, who are demanding swift justice and transparency in the investigation. Law enforcement authorities have assured that all suspects involved in the murder will be brought to justice as soon as possible.
