JHALOKATHI, Aug 9 (V7N) — US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T. Christensen is scheduled to visit the famous guava orchards and floating guava market at Bhimruli in Jhalokathi on Sunday.
According to sources familiar with the visit, the ambassador is expected to arrive in Bhimruli at around 9:00am. During his visit, he will tour the guava-growing areas and meet local farmers and traders. He is also expected to observe trading activities at the area's traditional floating market.
Bhimruli is one of Bangladesh's best-known floating agricultural markets, where guavas are transported and traded by boat along the waterways. The market becomes particularly lively during the monsoon season, attracting visitors from different parts of the country as well as international tourists interested in Bangladesh's rural landscape and traditional agricultural practices.
The Bhimruli market has long been associated with the region's guava-growing economy and has increasingly emerged as a distinctive tourism destination. Its waterways, orchards and boat-based trading system offer visitors a glimpse into a centuries-old rural trading tradition.
Christensen's visit is not the first by a US ambassador to the site. In 2019, then-US Ambassador to Bangladesh Earl Robert Miller visited the Bhimruli floating market, travelling by boat and interacting with local people during his tour.
Christensen assumed office as US ambassador to Bangladesh in January 2026. He has since taken part in a range of official engagements as Washington's diplomatic representative in Dhaka.
His visit to Bhimruli is expected to provide an opportunity to highlight Bangladesh's agricultural heritage, rural livelihoods and community-based tourism to an international audience.
