Tehran, Aug 04 (V7N)- Conflicting statements from the United States and Iran over possible negotiations to end their five-month-long conflict have created fresh uncertainty, while an attack on a ship near the Strait of Hormuz has raised concerns over global fuel supplies.
According to Reuters, US President Donald Trump claimed on Monday that talks with Iran were ongoing and described it as Tehran’s “last chance” to reach a deal. However, Iran denied holding any negotiations with Washington.
Speaking to reporters at the Oval Office, Trump said, “We are talking right now,” claiming that the discussions were taking place at the request of Iran as well as regional countries including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.
Trump said Iran has a final opportunity to sign an agreement. Earlier, he had said that he would halt further attacks as there was a possibility of negotiations, although he had previously threatened major military action against Tehran.
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghei rejected Trump’s claim, saying there were no talks with the United States and no meeting had been scheduled between the two countries.
Baghei said Iran was not expecting any foreign delegation or sending negotiators abroad in the coming days. He added that all Iranian negotiators were currently inside the country, except Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who was visiting Iraq for religious purposes.
He said the only ongoing discussions were with Oman regarding the management of shipping routes in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
