Comilla, Apr 17 (V7N)– Agriculture Minister Amin Ur Rashid has announced plans to incorporate solar-powered irrigation facilities into the government’s farmer card system, aiming to provide farmers with affordable seasonal irrigation support.
He made the remarks on Friday morning while addressing a ceremony for distributing farmer cards among 1,458 farmers at Aranyapur block of Jagannathpur union in Comilla Sadar upazila.
The minister said that once the farmer card is fully implemented nationwide, it will ensure transparency and accountability in delivering agricultural services. “No one will be able to deprive farmers of their rightful benefits once the cards reach everyone,” he said, adding that the cards will be distributed across the country in phases.
According to officials, among the 1,458 farmers receiving cards in Comilla:
- 205 are landless farmers
- 628 are marginal farmers
- 544 are small farmers
- 39 are medium farmers
- 2 are large-scale farmers
In terms of gender, 1,144 are male and 314 are female farmers.
The Department of Agricultural Extension stated that the farmer cards are being introduced in three sectors for the first time in Bangladesh:
- Crop sector: 1,214 cards
- Fisheries sector: 21 cards
- Livestock sector: 223 cards
The event was presided over by Deputy Commissioner Md. Reza Hasan. Among others present were Comilla-5 MP Haji Jasim Uddin, Comilla-7 MP Atiqul Alam Shaon, City Administrator Yusuf Molla Tipu, District Council Administrator Mostaq Mia, Agriculture Ministry Secretary Dr. Rafiqul E. Mohamed, and Fisheries and Livestock Ministry Secretary Md. Delwar Hossain.
Following the distribution ceremony, the agriculture minister visited various stalls at an Agriculture and Livestock Fair organized by the Department of Agricultural Extension.
