Dhaka, Aug 26 (V7N) – The government is set to change the name of Bangladesh Jail to Correction Service Bangladesh in a bid to give greater importance to prison-centric correction and rehabilitation.
Inspector General of Prisons Brigadier General Syed Md. Motaher Hossain announced the decision at a press conference on Tuesday after finalizing the draft of the Correction Service Act 2025.
He said the government has already approved new manpower to ease the acute shortage and a proposal for 1,500 additional staff has been submitted.
The IGP also revealed that an initiative has been taken to construct a central prison hospital in Narayanganj to strengthen healthcare facilities for inmates.
“Sometimes prisoners even call the Inspector General of Prisons from jail,” Brig Gen Hossain added, underscoring the need for stricter monitoring alongside reforms.
