Dhaka, Aug 26 (V7N)- An attempt to take control of the ambulance stand at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, has led to a police complaint. The attack was reportedly led by Zahid Hossain Morol, a former leader of the Dhaka North unit of Jubo Dal, who was previously expelled from the organization.
Abdul Alim, the convener of the local Krishak Dal unit, filed a General Diary (GD) at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station on the night of Sunday, August 24.
According to Abdul Alim, a powerful group involving brokers and ambulance drivers has formed a syndicate at the hospital. They don’t allow any outside ambulances to pick up patients. Alim claimed that he and his team were trying to break this syndicate.
On Saturday night, August 23, around 50 people, reportedly led by Zahid Morol, came to the hospital in an attempt to take over the ambulance stand. Alim said he reached the hospital around 9 PM and was approached by someone named Ripon, who said Zahid wanted to meet him.
When Alim met Zahid, he was verbally abused and physically attacked. Zahid allegedly slapped and threatened him, saying, “I’m Zahid Morol. I may have been expelled, but I can still finish you.” Alim also said that expelled labor leader Hasan is working with Zahid to take control of the stand, and they came with a large group to forcefully do so.
Alim added that although many people were nearby, no one came forward to help. He identified a few people in the group, including Rahmat Hossain Joy from Geneva Camp in Mohammadpur, Arman, Ripon (a local Chhatra Dal leader), and others from Adabor like Noor Mohammad Riyad and Rubel. He mentioned 40–50 unknown persons were also involved. Alim filed a GD and plans to file another formal complaint.
On the other hand, Hasan, who is known as a close associate of Zahid, claimed he runs an ambulance business at the hospital. He accused Mohsin, Rakib, Zahid, and others of beating up four of his drivers and staff members, who are now receiving treatment at the hospital. Hasan said they, too, have filed a complaint at the police station.
