Dhaka, June 18 (V7N)– The Bangladeshi government has issued a new ordinance stipulating imprisonment and fines for individuals who fraudulently claim benefits by providing false information, presenting themselves as injured or family members of "July Uprising" martyrs. The 'Welfare and Rehabilitation of Families of Martyrs of the July Uprising and July Fighters Ordinance, 2025,' includes stringent penalties to prevent abuse of state assistance.
Under the provisions of the newly enacted ordinance, any person found guilty of making false claims will face a maximum sentence of two years in jail and a fine of up to Tk 200,000, or double the amount of the benefit or financial assistance illegally received, whichever is higher.
The Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs published the gazette notification on Tuesday night, confirming that the ordinance comes into effect immediately.
The ordinance is designed to provide one-time and monthly financial aid to those injured in the "July Uprising" and to the families of its martyrs. The "July Uprising" refers to the movement and individuals who contributed to the dislodgement of the Awami League government.
The broader aim of the ordinance, as stated in the gazette, is to establish the essence and ideals of the July Uprising in state and national life, ensure the welfare and rehabilitation of the families of the martyrs and July fighters, and to preserve the history of the movement.
