Dhaka, Sep 25 (V7N)- Ghazi Salahuddin Tanvir, who was relieved of his duties with the Jatiya Nagarik Party (NCP), has alleged that he was subjected to physical and verbal abuse while in custody during remand.
He made the allegations at a press conference held at the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) on Friday morning (September 25).
Salahuddin alleged that he was threatened with the enforced disappearance of his family members if he spoke publicly about the alleged torture. He also claimed that he was verbally abused during remand and labeled a “July militant.”
According to Salahuddin, he was also questioned about the ouster of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and alleged that he was subjected to abuse during the interrogation.
He said fascism must not be allowed to return to Bangladesh and called for accountability over what he described as mistreatment in custody.
At the press conference, NCP Joint Convener Sarwar Tushar demanded the formation of a judicial inquiry committee to investigate the allegations and establish the facts.
Salahuddin was arrested by Bogura Detective Branch (DB) police in the early hours of August 5 from a rented house in Monipuripara, Mirpur, Dhaka, in connection with a case filed under the Cyber Security Act over allegedly defamatory Facebook posts concerning the prime minister.
The investigating officer sought seven days of remand, but a court granted three days.
Later, after falling ill, Salahuddin was admitted to Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital. He was subsequently transferred to Dhaka Central Jail for advanced treatment and later received treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital while in jail custody.
He was released on bail from Dhaka Central Jail on the evening of September 15.
