Dhaka, Aug 05 (V7N) – National Citizen Party (NCP) spokesperson Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan on Wednesday warned that allowing former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to make political statements would be viewed as direct interference in Bangladesh's internal political affairs.
He made the remarks while speaking at a programme featuring prayers for the martyrs of the July Uprising and food distribution among underprivileged people in the capital's Kathal Bagan area on the occasion of the second anniversary of the movement.
Asif Mahmud said that if Sheikh Hasina is given an opportunity to issue political statements, it would be interpreted as India playing a direct role in influencing Bangladesh's domestic political environment.
He also called on India to return Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh, referring to what he described as a prisoner exchange agreement. He further claimed that New Delhi has little interest in continuing to host the former prime minister and argued that the issue would not significantly affect bilateral diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Commenting on the country's political situation, the NCP spokesperson said that although the July Uprising led to the fall of what he described as an authoritarian government, the broader authoritarian system has not been completely dismantled even two years later.
His remarks came during an event marking the second anniversary of the July Uprising, where party leaders reiterated calls for further political reforms and accountability.
There was no immediate response from the Government of India or representatives of Sheikh Hasina regarding Asif Mahmud's remarks at the time of reporting.
