Dhaka, Aug 05 (V7N) – Opposition leader and Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman on Wednesday accused the government of betraying the public over the July movement, while demanding the implementation of a referendum and justice for those killed during the unrest.
Speaking at an 11-party unity rally held at the South Gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in the capital, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said the will of the people must be respected.
He claimed that "70 percent of the country's popular vote" could not be ignored, warning that governments which disregard the people's mandate ultimately face consequences.
The Jamaat chief also called for the prosecution of those responsible for the July killings, alleging that there has been no visible progress in ensuring justice. He said the head of government should offer an explanation over the matter.
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman further alleged that "fascism has returned to educational institutions in a new uniform," asserting that such a situation would not be tolerated.
Referring to the country's political climate, he said the overall situation suggested that another movement could emerge. He also urged party leaders and activists to remain prepared to oppose what he described as "new fascism."
The remarks were made during a political rally demanding the implementation of a referendum. The government had not immediately responded to the allegations at the time of reporting.
