Dhaka, Aug 20 (V7N) – The Election Commission (EC) has issued a gazette announcing Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as the elected President of Bangladesh, while the United Kingdom today congratulated him on his election and expressed readiness to further strengthen bilateral ties.
According to the EC gazette, as per Section 11 of the Presidential Election Act 1991 and the announcement of the election officer and election commissioner, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, son of Mirza Ruhul Amin of Kalibari village in Thakurgaon district, has been declared the President of the People's Republic of Bangladesh.
The gazette notification, issued this evening, was signed by Senior Secretary of the Election Commission Secretariat Akhtar Ahmed.
Meanwhile, the United Kingdom today congratulated Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on his election and expressed its readiness to further strengthen the longstanding partnership between the two countries.
"Congratulations to Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on his election as the President of Bangladesh," the UK said in a statement this afternoon. The UK said it looks forward to working with President Fakhrul and the Government of Bangladesh to further deepen the close and longstanding partnership between Dhaka and London.
The message reflected the UK's commitment to continued engagement with Bangladesh and further strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.
Mirza Fakhrul secured 302 votes out of 349 in the parliamentary election, defeating Colonel (retd.) Ali Ahmed, Bir Bikram. He is expected to be sworn in as the 23rd President of Bangladesh soon, succeeding Acting President Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram. Earlier today, China also congratulated the newly elected President, making the UK the second country to officially convey its congratulations.
