Dhaka, Aug 20 (V7N) – China has congratulated Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on his election as President of Bangladesh, expressing readiness to work closely with Dhaka to further strengthen bilateral relations for mutual benefit.
"Warm congratulations to His Excellency Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on his election as President of the People's Republic of Bangladesh," the Chinese embassy said in a statement issued this afternoon.
The statement said China attaches great importance to its relations with Bangladesh and stands ready to work closely with the Bangladeshi side to further advance bilateral cooperation.
China also expressed its willingness to jointly build a "China-Bangladesh community with a shared future in the new era." Beijing said such cooperation would help deliver greater benefits to the two countries and their peoples.
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was elected as Bangladesh's 22nd President on August 20, securing 302 votes out of 349 in the parliamentary election, defeating Colonel (retd.) Ali Ahmed, Bir Bikram. China is the first country to officially congratulate the newly elected President.
