Dhaka, Sep 17 (V7N) – The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a case against former Director General of Railways Touhidul Anwar Chowdhury and seven others for causing a state loss of nearly Tk 6 billion through the controversial import of Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) trains.

According to ACC sources, the case was registered on Wednesday.

The case statement said the government imported 20 DEMU trains from China about a decade ago at a cost of Tk 6.5 billion. However, within just five to six months of operation, the trains began experiencing serious mechanical failures.

Repeated repair attempts failed due to a lack of technical expertise and skilled manpower to handle the new technology. Eventually, by three years ago, all the DEMU trains were declared permanently out of service, turning the project into a massive financial burden.

The ACC alleged that personal interests and corruption were the main motives behind implementing the project, which has now ended up as a huge loss for the state exchequer.
