Dhaka, Sep 08 (V7N) – Abidul Islam, the Chhatra Dal–backed VP candidate in the upcoming DUCSU elections, has alleged that his Facebook account was disabled twice in what he described as a politically motivated cyber attack.

Speaking at a press conference at Dhaka University on Monday, Abid said, “I had already feared a cyber attack. Today, that fear came true. When I woke up in the morning and got ready to go out, I saw that my Facebook ID had been disabled.”

He explained that after his first appeal, the account was restored with supporting evidence, allowing him to resume online campaigning. But just an hour later, the ID was disabled again. “Another appeal has been made. But I don’t know if I will get the ID back before the election,” he added.

Abid said his Facebook account had been central to the election campaign, helping him reach a large number of students. He alleged that a rival political group, unable to counter him politically, resorted to cyber attacks.

Highlighting the broader challenge, Abid said, “Before August 5, we fought against political malculture at Dhaka University. After August 5, while practicing healthy politics, we are now forced to fight against an invisible force—those who neither believe in student rights nor tolerate free expression.”

Meanwhile, GS candidate Sheikh Tanvir Bari Hamim drew parallels between past repression and the present digital threats: “Earlier, if you spoke for the country, you would be disappeared. Now you are being cyber-attacked. Tomorrow, voters will respond through the ballots against those responsible for these cyber assaults.”
