Ukhia, May 16 (V7N) — A woman was killed in an incident of violence in Ukhia upazila of Cox’s Bazar district after allegedly being attacked while trying to protect her son, local sources and police said.

The deceased has been identified as Chhayada Khatun. The incident took place on Saturday night in Typalong village under Rajapalong union.

According to relatives, tensions had been building in the area following a controversy over the writing of “Joy Bangla” on the wall of Typalong Madrasa in Ukhia a few days earlier. Local Bangladesh Nationalist Party leaders reportedly filed a complaint with the police in connection with the incident.

Family members said the situation escalated on Saturday night after a Facebook reaction involving a “ha-ha” emoji on a post by a local Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leader. Following the online exchange, clashes reportedly broke out, during which a young man named Yunus was beaten by BNP and Chhatra Dal activists, according to allegations.

During the same incident, Yunus’s friend and NGO worker SM Imran was also attacked when he allegedly tried to intervene. Relatives said that Chhayada Khatun was injured when she rushed to the scene after hearing about the violence.

She was later taken to Ukhia Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared her dead.

However, BNP-linked individuals including Upazila leaders Mizanur Rahman Sikder and Jisan denied involvement in a press briefing, claiming they were not connected to the incident.

Ukhia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mujibur Rahman said that Yunus, described as a supporter of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League, has been taken into custody. Police added that the case is under investigation and no formal charges have been filed yet.
