Rajshahi, Feb 7 (V7N) — A visually impaired man was reportedly assaulted by a mob while campaigning in Nansar village of Dwippur Union, Rajshahi-4 (Bagmara) constituency. Local law enforcement and military personnel intervened and ensured his safe return home.

According to sources, Abdul Latif, a blind man who visits local mosques to seek support for his family, had recited Quranic verses after Friday prayers at a mosque in the area. He reportedly described himself as a “traveler” and requested assistance from worshippers.

Tension escalated when Tota Hossain, son of the local Awami League union president and a Jubo League activist, allegedly led a group of people from the mosque to confront Latif, accusing him of campaigning for the “scale” symbol, representing the Jamaat candidate. Conflicting reports suggest some worshippers were divided during the incident.

Local authorities, including the Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land), Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), army, and police, responded to the scene and deescalated the situation. Latif was escorted safely to his home.

Speaking to reporters, Abdul Latif said, “I am blind and go to different mosques to seek help for my family. I have never asked anyone for an allowance.”

Tota Hossain, representing the Jubo League, denied allegations of organizing a mob. “Musafir (Latif) made statements about prayer and also tactfully promoted Jamaat, so people protested. No one was attacked,” he said, adding that local Awami League supporters are campaigning nationwide for “scales and sheaves of rice.”

Bagmara Police Station Officer-in-Charge Saidul Alam confirmed that law enforcement ensured Latif’s safety and returned him home.

The incident highlights the tensions and heightened scrutiny around campaigning in the lead-up to the February 12 national elections.
