Jhenaidah, May 19 (V7N) – A violent clash between two groups of villagers over the sale of fish left at least 40 people injured in Jhenaidah's Harinakundu upazila on Sunday afternoon. The injured have been admitted to various hospitals, including Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital and the Harinakundu Upazila Health Complex.

The incident took place at Porahati Bazar and involved residents of Mailmari village in Shailkupa upazila and Charpara village in Harinakundu.

According to locals, the conflict began with an altercation on Saturday (May 17) at Charpara market over the buying and selling of fish. Tensions escalated on Sunday morning when three students from Charpara allegedly assaulted two Mailmari students outside Porahati Secondary School. This provoked a large-scale clash at Porahati market, where villagers from both sides armed with indigenous weapons fought for over three hours.

Harinakundu Police Station Officer-in-Charge MA Rouf Khan said that police and army personnel were deployed to control the situation. “All injured individuals have been rescued and taken to local hospitals for treatment. Additional police forces are on high alert in the area to prevent further violence,” he added.

The situation remains tense, and local authorities are closely monitoring developments.
