Mongla, Bagerhat, May 15 (V7N) – A workshop was organized in Mongla on Wednesday morning, bringing together traders and members of the market management committee, to address the growing issue of plastic and polythene pollution in the Sundarbans. The workshop took place at the Mongla Press Club auditorium and was presided over by Md. Sohel Rana, President of the Mongla Youth Forum for the Protection of the Sundarbans.
Environmental activist and coordinator of Amara for the Protection of the Sundarbans, Md. Nur Alam Sheikh, delivered the keynote speech at the event. Other speakers included Khandaker Jilani Hossain, Bagerhat District Project Coordinator of the Transformation; Suniti Roy, a leader of the market management committee; Khanjahan Ali; Md. Alamin Sheikh; and traders Sohag Milon, Md. Mizanur Rahman, Maharuf Billa, and Md. Shaheen Khalifa, all members of the Youth for the Sundarbans Mongla Forum.
In his keynote address, Md. Nur Alam Sheikh emphasized the severe impact of plastic and polythene pollution on the Sundarbans, often referred to as the "lungs of Asia." He highlighted that this pollution is harming the biodiversity and environment of the Sundarbans, including its aquatic life. He cited studies that have found microplastic particles in the bodies of Sundarban fish, warning that consuming these fish could lead to life-threatening diseases. He urged everyone to speak out against plastic and polythene pollution to protect the vital Sundarbans.
