Dhaka, July 27 (V7N)- The monsoon depression over the northwestern Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas of Odisha and West Bengal has intensified into a deep depression, prompting authorities to issue cautionary signals for maritime activities.
Due to the impact of the deep depression, gusty or squally winds may affect the northern Bay of Bengal and coastal areas of Bangladesh. In this situation, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has asked the seaports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra to display local warning signal number 3.
The information was disclosed in Special Weather Bulletin No. 2 issued by meteorologist Khondaker Hafizur Rahman of the Meteorological Department on Monday (July 27).
According to the bulletin, the deep depression was located at 6 am on Monday about 425 kilometers west-southwest of Chattogram seaport, 430 kilometers west of Cox’s Bazar seaport, 220 kilometers west-southwest of Mongla seaport and 260 kilometers west-southwest of Payra seaport.
The bulletin said the system is likely to move towards the north-northwest direction and cross the West Bengal-Odisha coast by Monday evening.
The maximum sustained wind speed near the center of the deep depression is around 50 kilometers per hour, which may increase to 60 kilometers per hour in the form of gusty or squally winds. The sea remains rough near the center of the system.
Due to the rough conditions in the Bay of Bengal, all fishing boats and trawlers in the northern Bay have been advised to remain cautious while operating near the coast and to stay in safe shelters until further notice.
