Dhaka, Mar 16 (V7N) — Three workers of Dhaka Electric Supply Company (DESCO) were killed and two others injured while installing underground power lines in Khilkhet, the capital, on Sunday afternoon.

The incident occurred in the Khapara area of Khilkhet around 3:30 pm. The deceased have been identified as Md. Rajib Hossain (25) from Barguna Sadar, Razzak Mia (57), and Farid Jaman (64) from Bakshiganj, Jamalpur. The identities of the two injured workers have not yet been confirmed. All victims are employed through DESCO’s outsourcing subcontractor company.

According to Khilkhet police, the workers were using a crane to lay electrical wires underground near a temple when one of the crane-lifted wires came into contact with another live electric line, causing a powerful shock that critically injured five workers. Three of them later succumbed to their injuries.

The victims’ bodies are currently at Kurmitola General Hospital, where the injured are also receiving treatment.

DESCO Chief Engineer Monjurul Haque stated that underground electrical line installation in the Khapara area had been ongoing for about a month. He added that the accident occurred while a crane was lowering a power cable from a truck, though the exact cause of the mishap is under investigation.

Authorities continue to investigate the incident to determine safety lapses and prevent future occurrences.
