Dhaka, Dec 08 (V7N) – The British High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Sarah Cook, has assured that Bangladesh will continue to enjoy duty-free access for its exports to the United Kingdom until 2029.
The announcement came during the HSBC Export Excellence Awards 2025, held on Sunday at a Dhaka hotel, where Cook was present as the special guest. She highlighted that this preferential treatment is part of the UK’s ongoing commitment to supporting Bangladeshi exports, particularly in the ready-made garment sector.
Cook stated that even beyond 2029, nearly 92 percent of Bangladeshi products, including apparel and other manufactured goods, will retain duty-free access to the UK market. She stressed that this is a strategic move that will help Bangladesh diversify its export base, strengthen trade ties, and expand its footprint in global markets.
The High Commissioner further emphasized that the decision demonstrates the UK’s long-term interest in fostering economic cooperation with Bangladesh and its commitment to supporting sustainable growth in bilateral trade.
Bangladesh’s export sector, especially ready-made garments, contributes significantly to the country’s economy, and duty-free access to major markets like the UK is considered vital for sustaining export growth and increasing international competitiveness.
The announcement has been welcomed by trade bodies and exporters, who view it as a major boost to Bangladesh’s trade prospects and a sign of confidence in the country’s manufacturing capabilities.
