Khulna, Oct 12 (V7N)- A police inspector in Khulna has suffered serious injuries to both hands after being attacked by three alleged robbers while returning from duty in plain clothes late at night.
The incident occurred near Metropolitan Collegiate School while Police Inspector (Unarmed) Md. Shah Alam was traveling by rickshaw towards the Khulna Metropolitan Police Club after crossing the Rupsha Ferry. The attackers allegedly snatched his wallet and two mobile phones.
When Shah Alam attempted to resist, one of the attackers reportedly struck him with a machete. He sustained severe injuries to both hands while trying to defend himself.
He was initially taken to the Police Hospital in critical condition. After receiving a unit of blood because of excessive bleeding, he was transferred to Khulna Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
The Superintendent of Police in Khulna later personally contacted the relevant authorities and arranged for Shah Alam to be transferred to the Central Police Hospital in Rajarbagh, Dhaka.
As his condition deteriorated, he was subsequently moved to the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases and Hospital and the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR), commonly known as Pangu Hospital.
Due to a shortage of specialist doctors during the weekend holiday, he was later transferred to Evercare Hospital, where surgeons successfully operated on both hands.
His physical condition is now improving. However, several fingers on both hands remain seriously damaged, raising concerns about possible long-term impairment.
Police Issue Safety Directive for Officers
Following the incident, the Superintendent of Police in Khulna issued an interdepartmental office order on Friday morning, urging police personnel to remain alert to potential risks and take precautions when traveling after duty, particularly late at night and while wearing plain clothes.
According to the directive, the order was intended to strengthen internal security awareness and protect members of the Khulna District Police. It was not intended to restrict their regular activities or convey a negative message about the district's law and order situation.
The Khulna District Police said it continues to carry out regular law enforcement operations to maintain public safety and order. Activities include establishing checkpoints, conducting anti-crime operations, recovering illegal firearms and arresting suspects wanted under outstanding warrants.
