New York, Jul 07 (V7N) — Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has held a bilateral meeting with a senior United Nations official to discuss strengthening Bangladesh's role in UN peacekeeping operations, enhancing the capacity of Bangladeshi peacekeepers and the proposed deployment of a specialized police unit to Haiti.

The meeting took place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York with Atul Khare, Under-Secretary-General for the UN Department of Operational Support (DOS).

According to officials, the discussions focused on expanding operational cooperation involving Bangladeshi military and police personnel serving in UN peacekeeping missions, accelerating the settlement of reimbursement claims and promoting sustainable environmental practices in peacekeeping operations.

During the meeting, the Home Minister said Bangladesh remains committed to contributing to global peace and security through its peacekeepers.

He noted that the effectiveness of UN peacekeeping operations would be further strengthened through the combination of Bangladesh's professionalism and the United Nations' logistical support.

Under-Secretary-General Atul Khare praised the professionalism, courage and discipline demonstrated by Bangladeshi military and police personnel serving in peacekeeping missions around the world.

He also commended Bangladesh's initiatives in environmental sustainability and assured that the country's proposals, including the deployment of a specialized police unit to Haiti, would receive serious consideration from the United Nations.
