Dhaka, Jun 20 (V7N) – Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will leave for Malaysia on Sunday (June 21) on his first official foreign tour since assuming office, with labor cooperation, regional integration and trade expected to dominate discussions.
The Prime Minister is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, where the two leaders will discuss reopening Bangladesh's labor market in Malaysia, Bangladesh's bid for ASEAN membership, and the possibility of a free trade agreement (FTA). Several bilateral agreements are also expected to be signed during the visit.
Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam disclosed the details at a press briefing held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday morning.
Following the Malaysia visit, Prime Minister Rahman will travel to China, where he will remain from June 23 to June 26.
During the visit, he is scheduled to meet Chinese Premier on June 25 and Chinese President Xi Jinping on June 26 for high-level bilateral talks.
According to officials, integrated river and water resource management, particularly the proposed Teesta Multipurpose Project, will be a major focus of discussions between Dhaka and Beijing.
Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir said Bangladesh and China are expected to sign 13 memorandums of understanding (MoUs), two agreements, one action plan and one protocol during the visit. He also noted that military cooperation between the two countries is expected to be further strengthened.
The Prime Minister will be accompanied by a 27-member delegation, including the Foreign Minister and the Information Minister, throughout the two-nation visit.
