Khagrachhari, Aug 24 (V7N) – Dragon fruit cultivation is gaining remarkable momentum in the hilly terrain of Khagrachhari, with farmers increasingly embracing this exotic fruit. One standout success is Khagrachhari Agro in Maisha Chhari, where dragon fruit farming has become a vivid reality.
A sweeping nine-acre orchard is now brimming with pink-hued fruits hanging from thousands of pillars. What began in 2013 with just 40 pillars has since expanded to 4,000, now supporting 12,000 dragon fruit plants. Every month, over 5 to 6 days, the orchard produces approximately three tons of fruit. These are sold at fair prices—meeting local demand and supplying markets across the country.

Garden owner Mostafizur Rahman employs organic methods using compost and cow dung to cultivate these flavorful fruits. Twenty workers are now employed at the orchard, earning wages and contributing to the farm’s profitability. Local farmers report that after covering expenses, they’re seeing solid returns.
According to official sources, during the fiscal year 2024–25, a total of 71.4 hectares in the district were dedicated to dragon fruit cultivation, aiming for a production target of 254 metric tons.
Bashirul Alam, Deputy Director of the Khagrachhari District Agricultural Extension Office, notes that with government support, dragon fruit acreage and yield could expand further, bolstering both the local economy and employment.
