Washington, Nov 02 (V7N)- The United States has reportedly supported a proposal to resume Russian natural gas supplies to Europe through a pipeline running across Ukraine, as part of broader efforts to secure an energy ceasefire between Moscow and Kyiv ahead of the winter season.
According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, citing US, European and Ukrainian officials, Washington is backing a plan that would allow Russian gas to reach European markets through a US intermediary.
The proposal is reportedly linked to ongoing discussions between Russia and Ukraine aimed at preventing attacks on energy infrastructure before the arrival of winter.
During visits to Moscow and Kyiv last September, US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff reportedly raised the proposal with officials from both sides.
Under the proposed arrangement, Russian natural gas would be sold to European buyers through an American intermediary, potentially creating a way to resume supplies while navigating existing European sanctions.
Those involved in the discussions reportedly believe the initiative could also generate substantial financial returns for US investors.
However, the proposal has encountered political and diplomatic resistance in several European capitals, where officials have raised objections to the prospect of restoring Europe's dependence on Russian energy.
The opposition presents a significant challenge to Washington's reported initiative, as any agreement would require cooperation among multiple countries.
Meanwhile, discussions over the proposed energy arrangement are continuing amid broader diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions between Russia and Ukraine and protect critical energy infrastructure ahead of the winter months.
